Tailored Devotional

Questions and Answers

How does Tailored Devotional work?

Tailored Devotional starts with Bible readings from a Lectionary of your choice. It then searches news sites for local news and its own database for relevant quotes from famous Christian theologians of your choice. It then relates the Bible texts, the news, and the quotes to your passions and preferences to write a short devotional. If you want, it also generates speech so you can listen to it. You can change the preferences whenever you want.

Can an AI really preach?

No, an AI cannot preach like a human. An AI is a tool that does not experience God or life. However, it has been trained on the theology and sermons of countless Christian preachers and theologians, and it knows every syllable of the Bible. It is therefore good at composing a meaningful theological message. Listening to an AI Devotional is like reading a book. The book itself is not a living being, but it originated with a living author. An AI itself is just a tool, but its training originates from living authors, including countless Christian thinkers.

How does one listen wisely to an AI-devotional?

Every preacher knows that no two listeners hear the same sermon, because the words of a sermon meet the heart of every listener differently. When it comes to the words of an AI-written Devotional, we as humans can always decide what we do with them. If the words contain wisdom and love, we can embrace them; if not, we can discard them. The meaning we make out of a message is the result of active discerning listening. “Examine all things; hold fast to what is good” (1 Thess. 5:21). “The wind/Spirit blows wherever it pleases” (John 3:8).

Is an AI Christian? Does it have theological convictions?

An AI is just a machine that is trained on a wide variety of human thoughts. Although some Christian AI sites claim that their AI is purely Biblical, it’s important to understand that no AI is inherently aligned with any theological tradition. Nevertheless, Christian thinking and extensive knowledge about the Bible are included in the training of leading AI models. AI is also trained to be compliant with the user’s requests. Therefore, it is a matter of prompting strategy and relevant input to have it produce meaningful Christian thought aligned with different Christian traditions and life circumstances. Tailored Devotional is a system that does precisely this. Having said this, AI has guardrails to limit destructive user compliance. Therefore, even if you write in your preferences that you want, for example, a theology that promotes hatred or violence, it will not comply.

What data do you store?

We store your email, preferences, and generated devotionals. We do not sell or share your data with third parties. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time. For details, see our Privacy Policy.

We ask users to write about their passions and preferences to improve the quality of the devotional. However, we also encourage users to write about their preferences and life circumstances in general terms. You decide. Do not disclose sensitive information!

Is it free?

Yes, Tailored Devotional is free during the beta period. Running AI services has real costs, so we will eventually need to introduce a paid tier or find sponsors to keep the service running. Beta users will be notified well in advance of any changes and are at no risk of being charged for anything they have not agreed on.
